Yamamoto WoodworksHakone Yosegi Zaiku Master
Yamamoto Woodworks brings a contemporary eye to the ancient art of Hakone Yosegi Zaiku. While honouring the traditional techniques passed down through the Hakone region, the studio explores new geometric forms and object types that speak to modern life — without ever compromising the integrity of the craft.
The Craft
Each Yamamoto piece begins with the careful pairing of wood species — cherry, zelkova, magnolia, and more — to achieve the desired contrast and pattern. The assembled veneers are applied by hand, then sanded and finished to a smooth, tactile surface that invites touch.
The Artisan's Story
Yamamoto Woodworks was founded by a third-generation Yosegi Zaiku artisan who wanted to bring this regional craft to a wider audience. The studio collaborates with designers and architects, finding new contexts for an old art form while keeping its soul intact.
